Building Supplies Bath and Radstock

A proud history built on family values

A J Champion started trading in October, 1967, selling coal and logs with just one lorry. As he became established, he went into quarry haulage, working from the quarries on the Mendips.

As time went by, he expanded his fleet of vehicles and was joined at the wheel by his two sons, Philip and Stephen.

In 2001, they purchased an old coal yard, at Chilcompton, in Somerset, and fulfilled an ambition to start up a new business as a builders’ merchant.

At first, A J and his sons started delivering aggregates. Then, customers started asking for other commodities and, before long, there was a long list of products that could be bought from what had become A J Champion & Sons Ltd.

Prompt and efficient service

They prided themselves on giving a prompt and efficient service … something which is at the forefront of the business to this day.

Sadly, A J Champion passed away in 2011, but the third generation has now joined the business. Philip’s eldest son, Sean is just as enthusiastic as his father. In fact, even more so where the transport is concerned … he does like to see every lorry go out sparkling clean at the beginning of each week!

Sean has been taken on as an apprentice through Somerset Skills & Learning to learn all aspects of the building materials industry. This will help him to carry on the excellent business that has been built up by his grandfather, father and uncle.
